RB’s Road Trip Adventures

Since his humans decided to buy a campervan last year, RB’s summer road trips have, in his opinion, really gone to a new level.  Home comforts like a fridge, solar power, a heater for chilly evenings and his own hammock?  RB is living the dream!

Since having ‘Penny’ the campervan RB has been on loads of exciting road trips all over the UK and Ireland.  If you’ve been following RB for a while then you’ll know how much he loves to travel.  He wants to share with you his thoughts on some of his favourite vanlife locations from the past 2 years and some photos which you might not have seen before.

Lakes and Mountains

Even though he’s a bit of a soap dodger and isn’t allowed to go swimming or paddleboarding (for obvious safety reasons!) RB does enjoy the tranquillity of a lake and one of the best things about lakes in his opinion is that they are often surrounded by mountains.  When you’re barely 6” tall even small hills can seem incomprehensibly big.  RB finds it very comforting to think that some mountains are so old that they contain deep in their layer’s fossils of plants and animals from dinosaur times.  No matter how uncertain life can feel, you can always rely on the ancient mountains to be there, just sitting, patient, wise and beautiful beyond words.  Llyn Ogwen and Llyn Idwal in Snowdonia, Wales are highlights for RB from this summer.

Coast lines

Talking of beautiful, RB has been lucky enough to see some incredible coast lines.  In 2025 we travelled all along the west coast of Ireland from Donegal to Mizen Head. The west coast meets the mighty Atlantic Ocean which means there’s nothing between you and America except night after night of stunning sunsets!

RB’s highlights from UK coast lines include the Jurassic Coast in Dorset, The Wash and Norfolk coast and Pembrokeshire in Wales where the sea was so turquoise he thought he was back in Corfu!  Hold onto your hats though, the seaside can be windy!

Ancient buildings

RB has noticed that the older and more dilapidated a building becomes the more interesting and photogenic it is.  Castles, churches, farm buildings and houses. There’s so many to see.  One of RB’s all time favourites is Roslee Castle at Easky in Sligo, Ireland.  Its only little but you can climb all the way to the top if you can find the secret staircase!  Another fave is Cwmorthin Slate Quarry in Wales.  This place really has it all, lake, mountains and loads of abandoned buildings.  We went there on a misty day in mid-October which made it one of the most atmospheric places RB has ever seen.

There are so many places to explore, RB’s humans have things called jobs which apparently means they can’t spend all their time on holiday.  RB thinks humans can be a bit crazy but as he can’t reach the pedals to drive the van he guesses he’ll have to keep hanging out with them!
